Chapter 17

Jason

I can hear him coming up the steps through the front door. I wince as he slams it and begins searching the house for Mia, screaming and slurring his words.

Why does he always want to pick on her?

Anger begins to boil in my stomach, and I grab the black box that I stole from his room that’s now underneath my bed. When I open the case, I grab the pistol without hesitation. I can hear him getting louder as he gets closer, slamming doors. I scramble to my feet and head toward Mia’s room. When I open the door, I find her crouched between the bed and the wall, hiding.

She’s shaking, looking up at me with terror in her eyes. “Jason, he’s going to get me.”

I grab her by the arm and pull her to me. “I will never let him hurt you.”

When I can hear his footsteps approaching, I cock the gun, loaded and ready. The door to Mia’s bedroom swings open, and our father comes stumbling in.

“Oh, look, it’s her knight in shining armor,” he says as he sways in the doorway.

The evening sun is beaming through the window, and my father notices the glint of gray shine in my hand.

“Oh, you think you’re some tough guy now, don’t ya?”

He stumbles over to me, and I step in front of Mia, acting as a barrier.

I shakily hold the gun up and point it at him. “Leave her alone or I’ll kill you.”

He lets out a menacing laugh. “You’re not strong enough to pull that trigger, boy.”

He begins to step forward once more, and in a split second, without thought, I hear the crack of the gun go off, followed by a thud as my father’s lifeless body falls to the floor.

My head slides off my hands, and my eyes jolt open before I hit my office desk. I sharply inhale as I am reminded of my surroundings.

You’re in your office. It was just a dream.

It’s been almost a month since my trip back home. Other than seeing the gravesite and headstone, that’s the only proof I have that my father is indeed dead. I have been working nonstop, staying at the office late in the evenings. I have barely seen Kat or spent any actual time with her.

I know she can sense a change in me, and I am too scared to tell her what has happened. I have not received any more notes from my ghostly father, nor have I seen any more strange men that resemble him.

It was just a sick joke.

“He doesn’t want any visitors right now!” I hear Ashley raising her voice at someone outside my office door.

I rise to my feet as Kat bolts through the door, looking highly agitated.

“I think he would make an exception for me.” She glares at Ashley. “Now, if you could give us some privacy.”

With a turn of her heels, she is out the door, and Kat turns to face me.

“What are you doing here?” I snap a little too aggressively, leaning over and holding onto my desk.
